  • Scheduling and training news teams for bulletins and the station’s daily news show, The Pulse. Currently we have more than 25 reporters, researchers and bulletin readers. My position has taught me leadership and organisational skills through managing many teams as well as how to work efficiently as part of a team.
  • Writing and reading professional hourly bulletins for a specific demographic.
  • Covering a range of news types including student, local, national and international news as well as entertainment, sport and movie news.
  • Producing high quality packages including interviews, voxes and voicers using Cool Edit and Audacity.
  • Through working closely with local/student bodies such as our Student Union Exec team, lecturers and Nottinghamshire Police, I understand how to deal with the public as well as people in positions of authority and how to present their comments appropriately in a news story.
  • Live phone and studio interviews on The Pulse have taught me how to work under pressure live on air and what to do if a guest says something offensive or unexpected.

 

May 2010: Covering Derby South’s General Election results for Heart East Midlands.

  • Independently stationed in the counting room all night feeding updates and information back to the News Editor in the Office.
  • Interviewing elected MP Margaret Beckett after announcements were read out, as well as other running candidates.
  • Editing audio down in Burli ready for broadcast in the 6am bulletin.

 

December 2009: Reading Gold weekend bulletins and shadowing weekend shifts at Heart Dorset.

 

 

July 2009: 2 weeks with the news team at Heart Dorset.

  • Shadowing weekend shifts, reading Gold bulletins, uploading to Glam etc.
  • I worked independently, collecting and editing voxes and interviews for bulletins.
  • Researching and writing my own stories, using wires and dealing with staff and the public.
  • Independently producing online news content with embedded pictures and videos.
  • Voice training sessions with the News Editor.
  • Interviewing MP for Bournemouth East Tobias Elwood gave me confidence in interviewing people of high regard.
  • Use of police/coastguard/fire voice-bank.

 

Nov 2008: 3 weeks work experience with the news team at Trent FM.

  • Independent work on stories, collecting audio, writing copy.
  • Interviewing celebrities including Michael Parkinson and Dicky Bird.

Oct 2007 – Jun 2008: Presenter, Lunchtime gossip/chat show on URN, giving me confidence on air and familiarity with running the desk.
