Apologies that my first post on here is going to be so negative….
The internet in the Studios has been down for over a week now, which is a pain in the arse for everyone, but especially the news team as it means we can’t get any audio off irn, cant keep up to date with new stories and have to write and compile news from elsewhere on campus. We’ve managed, going old school and buying real newspapers and working in the (few) IT rooms there are around but it’s been difficult. We pride ourselves on our scheduling and programming at URN and at all costs keep up with it. We’ve now found out that the University have shut down our internet access as they say we are posing a breach to the Uni’s network security and because there has been a big increase in traffic to our website, which we should’ve warned them about. Surely by agreeing to host a radio station, they realise that we need internet to research our shows etc and that there’s going to be a decent amount of traffic to our site (great news for us) AND we can’t let them know in advance when there’ll be an increase in traffic to our homepage. They are refusing to put the net back on and a meeting between them and our Station Ed has been arranged.
Unfortunately this is another example of the Uni’s lack of co-operation with students and their acting without discussing the issue with us first. By ‘another’, i’m referring to the similar way in which the Uni dealt with students over the terrorism arrests on campus last May, co-operating with the Police more readily than the students, and the peaceful sit-in which was ended by force from the Uni at the beginning of the month. I’ll keep you posted with what the Uni say….
