URN at the Student Radio Awards 2009

The man, the legend, Mr Fergus Dufton.

The man, the legend, Mr Fergus Dufton.

I wasn’t sure how we’d fare this year as we won a lot last year, including Student Radio Station of the Year….. but thankfully politics didn’t prevail over the SRA judges.

This year URN won gold and silver for Best Specialist Music programming. Radio Clubfoot came top, with their show devoted to electro, dubstep and grime. The boys were regulars on the dj circuit in Nottingham over the last few years, warming up for Fake Blood at Gatecrasher, Riton at Market Bar and headlining at Nottingham University’s Summer Party 2009 alongside Filthy Dukes. Silver went to The Evening Show, which airs between 7 and 9pm bridging the gap between daytime programming and specialist music.

Mr Fergus Dufton won gold for Best Male Presenter. Radio 1 daytime presenter and SRA pin-up, Greg James won this award while on University of East Anglia‚Äôs student station, Livewire, so Ferg’s future in radio definitely looks promising.

We picked up silver for Best Branding and Marketing thanks to our whizz of a website editor and bronze for our coverage of The Varsity and Station of the Year.

Although damn pleased with the results, the news team was pretty peeved not to get nominated for Best Journalistic Programming this year as we won gold last year. But it’s made us all the more determined for next year. Bring it on.

Well done to everyone who worked so hard on the entries over the summer and to all those who give up their time to make URN one of the best student radio stations in the country.
